“What we advise is, actually, take a beat, slow down a little bit, and really reflect on what’s the progress you’re trying to make in your career right now,” Horn says, asking ” What really drives your energy? What capabilities do you want to be known for?” He notes, “After you’ve done a little bit reflection, then you’re ready to actually say, ‘OK, I know how I want to hire my next job,’ because people don’t think about it [that way, but] you get to hire your next job just as much as employers are hiring you.”

Beyond defining what career progression means to you, Horn says, “Know how to tell your story” through your resume and interview to show potential employers why you’re the right fit.
